A wedding takes all kinds of help to plan, but a wedding on a family farm is a big undertaking. It was so fun to see the barn change each time I saw it. From the first photos that were sent to the final walk through and scouting locations to the day of the wedding – it was incredible to see all of the changes and to make a few recommendations as a photographer. My favorite has to be the large chandelier. I commented that I wish most chandeliers would hang lower so they could be seen in photos – so they put the light on electric pulley that could raise and lower it for photos! What a great idea. Even the groom got his hands dirty and helped lay the mulch (he did lots of other things too). On the day of the wedding everything looked even better than I imagined! It was the perfect backdrop for Olivia and Hal’s love story. The weather was amazing and we headed to Clifty Creek Golf Course for photos first. One of my favorite moments was watching the Bride and Groom walk together on the golf course bridge. Olivia had bare feet. Her wedding shoes kept getting caught on the lace of her dress so she kicked them off. I love that she was able to do that! As we were driving to their farm I saw many machines cutting down the corn husks and I was worried. But when I arrived on the farm I saw that the farmer left plenty of rows for photos! My favorite part of the reception had to be the couple dancing together. They are such a sweet couple! And that smile on the Mother of the Groom? That was from the Groom breaking into a fun fast dance. Just before we left to head home we took the couple outside for a few end of the night photos. What an incredible day full of so many amazing moments. Congrats to Olivia and Hal on their special wedding day! We wish you two all the very best. And a big thank you to their friends and family who really came together to create an amazing space for events – it was quite a barn raising! And a big thanks to their incredible wedding professionals who made the day so great!

5 Tips to Rock your Senior Session

Category: Portraits | October 2nd, 2016
pottingerphotocincinnatiseniorvintage-8-_thumbWhen it comes to taking senior portraits, its normal to feel a little awkward. Many seniors are self conscious of how they will appear because taking pictures solo can feel uncomfortable. We have the top five things you need to know in order to nail your photo session with confidence. Put these tips to practice and you can rest assured that you will love your portrait for years to come.
1. Use your eyes
Avoid awkward photos by using your eyes to express emotion. When a natural smile occurs the whole face lights up and the eyes look bright and awake. You can practice smiling in the mirror and working different expressions. You want the muscles in your face to contract and change the shape of your eyes to ensure your smile looks natural.
2. Relax
The best photos take place when the subject is relaxed and confident. Let the excitement of what this picture means translate through the lens by taking a moment to relax, breathe, and have fun with it. You may feel silly but we are used to this and will help you feel comfortable.

3. Breathe
This may sounds like an obvious one, but breathing is a key aspect in capturing a natural look. You can practice taking a big breath while smiling in front of a mirror. Slowly release the air while holding the smile and notice how your face and eyes settle into a natural and relaxed expression. Allow your eyes to “smile” by focusing on the apples of your cheeks pressing upwards. When in doubt, just breathe.
4. Move
Staying stationary can often times produce a very staged and cheesy look. Just because you are still does not mean that you can’t change your angles to create a fresh and inspired look. Try leaning into the camera slightly to appear more engaged, shifting your weight from left to right, or simply moving your chin slightly up and down for different shots to get a variety of facial expressions.

5. Beautify
This goes for everyone. Ladies, spend the extra time getting your hair blown out, getting your makeup done and choosing that top that makes you look and feel your best. Fellas, take a shower and shave. If you look your best and feel your best you are more confident. Go the extra mile to walk into your senior session feeling confident, attractive, prepared, and inspired.

Fall is for Family!

Category: Portraits | September 28th, 2016

Fall is the perfect time to snuggle just a little bit closer! What new family tradition will you start this fall? Do you have plans for a hayride or picking out your pumpkin? We want to help you tell your stories!

These two are so much fun together! It was so great to catch them while they were in town and to get to meet them in person. Their wedding will be next year at one of my favorite venues – the Newport Aquarium! On a recent visit to Pyramid Hill I scouted locations for their photos. The city of Hamilton was a wonderful backdrop. I arrived a few minutes early to figure out where to park and where to walk for our photos. The area around the Fitton Center was perfect! And a big thanks for Rachel’s mother Linda for helping with the reflector for a few photos. She has been wonderful to help with so much of the legwork of the wedding. Rachel and Suresh thank you for making your photo session a blast!
